The only thing tougher than finding an Apple iPad 2 in stock is finding the right case to go with it. In my case, it was more difficult in more ways than one. More on that later. Besides the price, there were two major things that I considered in choosing the right case, how I was going to use the iPad and where I was going to take it. With these considerations, I chose the Treegloo iPad 2 Case.

The Treegloo case is in the category of Moleskine style cases. Other cases in these categories include DODOcase, Pad and Quill, and Portenzo to name a few. The only one that I had seen before getting the Treegloo case was the Pad and Quill. A few friends of mine had got their Pad and Quill after they were lucky enough to get an iPad 2 early, and they love their cases. After seeing the build quality of their cases I was anxious to see how the Treegloo would turn out as well. I went with the Treegloo instead of the Pad and Quill was because of the lower price and good online reviews. It took a long time to get the case, but so far I’m impressed.

I never get into specifications too much in my reviews because you can read that yourself. What I can say so far is that the build quality is really good. Compared to the Pad and Quill, I do believe it is thicker but the thickness gives it a bit more substance. The leather outside doesn’t seem as tightly wrapped but they may be by design. The little bit of give in the leather wrapping gives it a little bit of a padded feel. Also, the little bit of give makes it easy to fold the flap back without any reservations. It is a smart cover, so as you open the flap, the iPad wakes up from sleep. One of the things that I liked about the Apple Smart Cover is that it allowed you to stand the iPad up on a table. The Treegloo allows you also to stand it up by using the front cover flap as a stand.

The Delays

Getting the case was a different story. With any of these Moleskine style cases, these cases ship anywhere between 7 days to 6 weeks from your order, depending on the company you order it from and the options you put into the case. In my case, my April 28th and received it May 26th. The main issue I had with the whole process was the slow response from customer service and the lack alerts when there were delays. They originally said 7-14 days but that soon got delayed and delayed. Their original response was this.

Sincerest apologies for the overdue response and delay in shipment. We are small team that has been inundated with orders and our production queue has run longer than expected.

My biggest issue with this statement was, if they were inundated with orders, then they should really invest some money into their customer service. They said that they would hopefully send it out the following week. When that time came and went, there was no update. The short version of the story is, it seemed like only when I contacted them via email and twitter / facebook, then they would respond. Eventually, I did get the case and I am overall happy with the product. I will say, the experience has made me not trust whatever their customer service says. That maybe a little too rough but that’s just my experience.

What I liked:

Build quality

Doesn’t announce that you have an iPad to everyone

Easy to stand the iPad up.

What I didn’t like:

More bulky that some competitors

Difficult to put in headphones into audio jack

Customer Service

Delivery time.

Despite the customer service issues and the long shipping times, I would definitely recommend the case. Going back to my two considerations of choosing a case… how I was going to use the iPad and where I am going to take it. The iPad is mainly being used as a consumption device and not as a production device. This means that I didn’t need a case where I can type using the iPad easier. The places I’m taking the iPad is to church meetings and coffee shop. I didn’t want a case that would announce that I had an iPad. This case meets these two criteria.

I’ve had a month to play around with the Eye-Fi SD card. What’s so special about this card? It allows me to wireless transfer pictures from my camera to my computer without much effort. You may be asking, is there much effort transferring photos? It’s gotten much less since I got a computer with a built in SD card reader, but once you get an Eye-Fi card, you can’t go back. If you want to know how it works, click here. I’m not going to get too much into the technical details but give a short account of my experience with the card.

Coming home, after being out for the day taking pictures, I simply turn on my camera and my computer and the pictures automatically start to transferring from my camera to the computer. A lot of times, I’m taking pictures of things around the house. I don’t have to think about transferring them to my computer because it happens while I’m shooting.

Direct Mode

During CES, Eye-Fi announced Direct Mode for their line of cards. Basically, if the Eye-Fi card can’t find one of it’s Wifi network that it was setup for, it creates a mini Wifi hotspot in which other configured devices can connect to it. What does mean to me? This means that I can transfer photos directly to my phone or tablet when I’m out and about. I also use direct mode with my own laptop as well. If I’m not in my home network (at a coffee shop, a friend’s house, etc) I can still wirelessly transfer photos to my computer using direct mode.

The Goods:

Wireless transfer photos to my computer

Wireless transfer to my mobile devices using Direct Mode

Automatic online sharing

The Bads:

Expensive compared to regular SD cards

Uses a little more

Setup may not be the easiest for the less tech savvy people (especially when trying to use Direct mode).

Overall, the Eye-Fi card is definitely a highly recommended accessory to your digital camera. There are other features that I don’t use such as automatic online sharing, geo caching, and cloud storage. If you shoot photos on a daily basis like I do, you’ll appreciate the effortless transfer of photos. Highly Recommnded

The first time we used this unit was on our trip to Maine and then back into Boston. I would say that the unit worked flawlessly on that trip. The directions were very clear and it alerted me just at the right time before an upcoming turn. I am testing it out on my local streets here in California just to see how it performs. I would say there is a flaw in the system. With the TomTom, I was able to give priority on the type of route it gave me. I was able to do the fastest route, avoid highways if possible, shortest route, and even avoid toll roads. With this unit, when I go from my house to work, it seems to want to avoid the freeways if possible, even though taking the freeway is probably both the shortest and fastest way. Another thing that is kind of weird is the interface. I mean, come on, it uses Windows CE as it’s operating system. Everytime I hit a button, it says what I’m pressing. I mean, it says everything. Every letter I enter, every command I press, it tells me. There is no option to turn that off only. It’s all or nothing with the volume control.

Overall, it was a good buy. I’m still debating weather or not I should return it and get a refurbished TomTom or not. The refurbished part kind of makes me nervous and the cheaper TomTom units don’t do text-to-speech (basically, they don’t read out the names of the streets). For the price, I would say that the Magellan RoadMate 1412 is a good value. If you trust refurbished units, I would go with a refurbished TomTom, but you just don’t know what you’re going to get.

Virgin America airlines is one of the latest airlines to open to try to entice customers with their service at a great price. I must say that they were the cheapest I could find as far as ticket prices were concerned. I was looking for a cheap flight from Southern California (LAX, Long Beach, or Orange County airport) to Boston. Not only were they the cheapest I found for that day, but they one of the few direct flights. Unfortunately, living in Orange County, about 10 minutes away from the Orange Country Airport, they only had flights out of LAX. The good news is, while I was in Boston, they had their grand opening for flights flying out of Orange County.

My reviews will never be long so let me get to my likes and dislikes. There were a few things that I did like about the whole experience. One of the main advantages of being a new airline is that your planes look and feel new. This ranges from the bathrooms to the individual seats in front of you. Another small but innovative thing they did was food ordering from LCD monitor in front. Of course, we don’t like the fact that airlines charge for food now, but what makes it even worse is that they push the carts down the aisle trying to sell you the food. Ordering food from the LCD not only makes it a lot easier to pay for your food (slide your credit card right there), but it also means that there is less cart in the aisle. The cart only came through once the whole time with drinks, which was a nice detail. This was also the first flight that I’ve been on to offer WiFi. The only thing that I didn’t like at all about it was the fact that they never mentioned that it was going to cost $10. I’m not surprised that they are charging money for it. I just didn’t like the fact that they kept on highlighting it but never mentioned the price.

The main thing I didn’t like was the entertainment interface. It was okay but I felt that the system was slow and the menu interface would get a little bit mixed up, particularly when I switched from TV to maps and vice versa. My particular unit seemed to be a bit deffective. For part of the flight I couldn’t get a TV signal. I know that with satellite this can happen, but other people around me were enjoying their television fine. I know that this is not too big of a deal because it could just be an isolated case, but first impressions are something.

Overall, I thought Virgin America Airlines was good. I didn’t care much for the ambient blue light that was glowing in the ceiling. I must say that it seems like they are trying to sell this to a little bit young demographic with all their designs, seemingly younger flight crew, and entertainment options. I will say though, when buying airplane tickets, the #1 thing I’m still looking for is lower prices. That said, if I can get a lower price and fly on Virgin America, I will say that is a plus. In conclusion, I will say that I wasn’t blown away. What I’m trying to say is, the amenities that were offered, I almost expected them to be there, especially with Jet Blue offering very similar features.

They are calling it the “world’s fastest web browser.” When I told my co-worker that, his response was, “Even faster than Google Chrome?” Since Google Chrome is not out yet for the Mac I can’t do a fair comparison. I would say that sites do render way faster in Safari 4 than in any other browser. It is still in beta. Even I found a bug while writing this post. I actually had to switch back to Firefox because I couldn’t do some things in my editor. One thing that I miss in Firefox and Chrome that all versions of Safari are missing is the ability to just quickly go to a particular tab. For example, on a Mac, if I have six tabs open in Firefox, if I’m on the first tab and I want to go to the forth tab, all I have to do is press ‘Command + 4′ and I’m there. I don’t have to click on the tab with my mouse or Ctrl-tab my way to the forth tab. Remember, the keyboard is always faster than the mouse. Maybe I’ll do a post on my keyboard shortcuts one day.

By the way, once again… if you are still using Internet Explorer 6, please upgrade. Actually, if you are using Internet Explorer, my question is… why? Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari are the way go.

As you can see… neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down. I just don’t have any graphic that’s in between.
Pros:Really good initial taste.
Cons: The taste and flavor was completely gone in less than 10 min.
Verdict: Even though the taste was good, it’s never a good thing where I can probably count the number of chews before the flavor goes away. I can’t give it a thumbs down because the flavor is not bad, but the thumb is tilting down for sure.

The wife and I took a little mini vacation for a our five year anniversary. I got a great deal on a room on hotels.com at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena. I normally don’t book 5 star hotels nor can I afford to, but for a special occasion and a great deal, why not. Next to the name listed on hotels.com, it said “Formerly Ritz-Carlton.” Even though we only stayed one night, it’s definitely a thumbs up.

Here are a few pictures from the hotel.

So I’m going to start a new review section on my blog. What am I going to be reviewing… anything and everything. Candy, gadgets, restaraunts, etc. Why am I doing it… well.. because I can and if something stands out to me, good or bad, I’ll share about it.

My first review is something I saw at the supermarket in the checkout line, the Ice Breaker Chews Sours. Maybe I got a bad box or something, but these things are kind of hard to chew and the flavor doesn’t quite have the same kick as it’s hard candy cousin, the Ice Breakers Sours. This is definitely a thumbs down.

Update: A quick explanation of why I gave it a thumbs down. It’s all about texture. When I first bit into it, I didn’t know if it was a bubble gum or something else. I know it’s not much explanation, but still… if it’s chewy candy, I want it to be Skittle like or bubble gum like, but not something that I can’t explain.
